Justified Anger at Pope Ratzinger

The outcry has been heard across the western world from those upset about the decades of child abuse by Catholic Priests in Europe.

Ireland broke the ice a few months ago when it was reported that children had been abused at schools and that cases had been covered up by authorities within the church.

Now more cases are coming up in Germany where now Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger, was allegedly involved in keeping sexual abuse incidents quiet so as not to discredit the church.

The Vatican has been highly critical of these accusations, lashing out against the New York Times and other media that have reported heavily on the issue.

A guest on a recent radio program reminded listeners of how the Boston Globe played a crucial role in uncovering the Catholic priest sexual abuse scandals in the Boston area, which combined with a letter written by a bunch of priests in the area, led to the ousting of Cardinal Bernard Law who had covered up cases over decades.

Since the church in the US and Ireland has not appropriately dealt with abuse cases, victims have depended on the press to get the church and civil authorities to do anything. Had the church dealt with these priests as criminals instead of just as "sinners" the cases would have been by reported by the press but it would have been over quickly. Now we have decades of abuse in Europe piling up and all the cases come up at once, with the current Pope allegedly involved in previous coverups.
